The Pentagon has confirmed that US forces conducted an airstrike targeting Mohammed Emwazi, the radical Islamist known as "Jihadi John", but could not yet say whether he had been killed.
In a statement, Press Secretary Peter Cook said: "We are assessing the results of tonight's operation and will provide additional information as and where appropriate".
The Associated Press, citing an unnamed US official, reports that a drone was used in the attack, targeting a moving vehicle in which Emwazi was believed to have been travelling.
