ALBAWABA - A neighborhood disagreement in southern Egypt turned fatal as a fight between youngsters developed into an armed encounter involving four women with AK-47 rifles, killing two people and leaving two others in police prison.
The killing took occurred in the town of Nagaa Azzouz in the Deshna region of Qena Governorate, where authorities say neighboring families have long had issues between them. What started as a squabble between kids swiftly escalated to their mothers and then gunshots was exchanged.
Preliminary investigations show that one woman was killed at the site after being shot, while a second victim died from her injuries at Deshna Central Hospital.
Police and emergency services went to the village after hearing about the shooting and cordoned off the area before taking the remains of the victims to the hospital morgue. The two women suspected of involvement have been apprehended by the authorities and the prosecutors are still examining the facts of the occurrence.
Local journalist Mohamed Asaad said Sky News Arabia the dispute started about midday and quickly escalated into an armed conflict. The two victims were not related but neighbors, he said, describing the case as "quite extraordinary" because it solely involved women and no men were involved in the abuse.
Security officers were on high alert throughout the village and outside the homes of the accused to prevent any further violence. Officials said it is too early to determine if the killings could spark a wider rivalry, as investigators are trying to piece together the whole sequence of events. The legal proceedings and the forensic examinations are still underway, with the Public Prosecution continuing to interrogate suspects and witnesses.
