A U.S. State Department security officer was killed Sunday during a mortar or rocket attack at a U.S. base near Baghdad International Airport, the U.S. Embassy announced.
Ed Seitz, an agent with the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, was killed at about 5 a.m. at Camp Victory, embassy spokesman Bob Callahan said. Camp Victory is the headquarters of the U.S.-led occupation's ground forces command.
An undetermined number of people were injured in the attack but none with life-threatening injuries, Callahan said.
Meanwhile, American warplanes attacked suspected positions in Fallujah Sunday, killing five people, Reuters cited witnesses as saying.
According to hospital officials and witnesses, the dead were civilians.
Elsewhere, a car bomb exploded Sunday near a U.S. patrol in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the military said. No casualties were reported.
The car exploded when attackers fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a U.S. patrol in eastern Mosul as the soldiers checked reports the vehicle was rigged with explosives, said Capt. Angela Bowman of Task Force Olympia.
No Americans were injured and no civilian casualties were immediately reported, Bowman said. Witnesses said U.S. soldiers sealed off the site of the explosion. (Albawaba.com)
