Given the dramatic humanitarian situation in Syria, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has decided to dispatch Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos to the war-torn Arab country. The Briton is tasked to access the situation, a UN spokesperson said on Wednesday in New York. When Amos will travel to Syria, is yet to be finalized.
In a letter to all UN member countries Amos voiced "deep concerns" about the situation in Syria. It said many people are desperate, 100,000-200,000 were on the run, and as many were staying with relatives.
The letter said Syrians need food, but also drugs and ceilings. Amos wrote that many areas are not accessible for emergency aid workers, however. She said she wanted to travel to Syria as soon as possible and to press the regime to allow the freedom of movement for aid workers.
Even Russia and Iran, the biggest supporters of the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad expressed their concern about the "dramatic situation" in Syria.
In a telephone conversation between Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the need to end the violence in Syria was stressed, according to Kremlin data. In addition, the two leaders agreed that "a constructive dialogue between the regime and the opposition without any preconditions" must be held.
