U.N. peacekeepers in the Golan could be threatened by a spillover from the conflict in Syria, a senior U.N. official said Tuesday, according to AFP.
Although no casualties have been reported so far, "intense shelling and heavy clashes" between the Syrian army and rebels have taken place since August 17 in a U.N-patrolled zone between Israel and Syria, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, assistant secretary-general for political affairs, told the news agency
As a result, said Fernandez-Taranco, peacekeepers have had to seek shelter.
"Incidents of threatening behavior against UNDOF personnel from armed members of the opposition were also reported," he said.
On Saturday Israeli forces returned fire after Syrian shells fell on a part of Israeli-occupied Golan.
Israel captured 1,200 square kilometres of the Golan Heights during the Six Day War in 1967. Technically, it is still at war with Syria.
