ALBAWABA- The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, with three votes in favor, the US voting against, and 11 abstentions.
However, the proposed amendment by Russia, which aimed to include the phrase "permanent ceasefire," was not adopted.
China expressed its support for the new draft resolution emphasizing an "immediate" ceasefire.
The Russian delegate to the UN announced that they were instructed to vote affirmatively on any resolution containing the term "permanent ceasefire."
Similarly, Mozambique's delegate emphasized the importance of working towards achieving a permanent ceasefire in the region.
However, the American delegate clarified that due to disagreements over certain elements of the resolution, the United States refrained from supporting it. The American delegate emphasized the resolution's affirmation of peace during Ramadan and underscored the imperative of neutralizing threats posed by Hamas to Israel's security.
Slovenia's delegate hailed the resolution as a crucial step toward alleviating the suffering of civilians in Gaza, signaling hope for a positive change.
On a conciliatory note, the Algerian delegate highlighted the resolution's significance in conveying solidarity with the people of Gaza and reaffirming the international community's commitment to addressing their plight.
Furthermore, the delegate reiterated the aspiration for Palestine to attain full sovereignty as a member state of the United Nations.
Previously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stark threat, warning that if the United States fails to exercise its veto power in the Security Council, he will cancel the Israeli delegation's planned visit to Washington.
