The United Nations, along with a number of humanitarian agencies in Sudan, has renewed calls on the international community to “immediately provide Sudan with necessary aid to fight back a serious threat of famine that is likely to affect the southern and western parts of the country, reported the official KUNA news agency.
A statement by the UN’s headquarters in Khartoum said Monday that “over 600,000 people face starvation and that diseases rapidly spread as young and old all drink polluted water that also sustains cattle.”
The statement called on world countries to provide Sudan with 245 million dollars.
Last month, the United Nations World Food Program warned that as many as three million Sudanese were threatened by hunger because of drought and conflict and expressed alarm that the situation continued to worsen.
As war and drought-induced hunger sweeps mercilessly across the country, WFP said it will run out of food by mid April.
