UN gives full support to Palestinian unity government

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today that the UN will give its full support to the new Palestinian unity government to help reunite the West Bank and Gaza Strip according to AFP.

AFP reports that Ban's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said "The United Nations has long underscored the need for progress towards  Palestinian unity," and that "the United Nations stands ready to lend its full support to the newly formed  government in its effort to reunite the  West Bank and Gaza... under one  legitimate Palestinian authority".  U.N. special envoy Robert Serry also held talks with Palestinian Prime  Minister Rami Hamdallah about "the serious political, security, humanitarian and economic  challenges in Gaza, and holding long overdue elections".

The United States has also agreed to work with the new  government causing anger from Israel according to AFP. Israel had called on the international community not to hurry into recognizing the government.
