UN envoy Middle East envoy Terje Roed-Larsen held talks Thursday with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat following the wave of Israeli helicopter strikes against the West Bank and Gaza Strip, reported (AFP)

"They are entering into discussions right now," UN spokeswoman Marisa Kemper told AFP.

She said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was back in Jerusalem after cutting short his trip to Lebanon to hold consolations with Israel and the Palestinians.

In a statement issued after his departure from Beirut, the UN chief said he decided to return to Jerusalem and Gaza "for consultation with both sides."

"We are at risk of seeing a dangerous situation escalate to a crisis that could destabilize an entire region," he said. "Violence breeds violence. I urge you to opt for restraint." – (AFP)
