Employees of the UN relief agency for Palestinians announced in Damascus Monday they will take up a collection to assist Palestinian victims of violence in the region.

In a drive timed to coincide with Christmas, New Year and the Islamic festival of Eid al-Fitr, employees of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and students at the agency's schools will gather funds from December 15 to 31.

The money will help Palestinians whose families have lost their means of support, who have been handicapped or whose homes have been damaged in the fighting, the UNRWA workers said in a statement.

Some 344 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed since violence erupted September 28 -- DAMASCUS (AFP)
