The United Nations envoy to Syria has publicly condemned the Assad regime's use of barrel bombs in a deadly attack in Aleppo that killed upwards of 70 people, reports AFP.
"The news of aerial bombing by Syrian helicopters on a civilian market area of the Aleppo neighborhood of Al-Shaar deserves the most strong international condemnation," Syrian envoy to the UN Staffan de Mistura said in a statement after Saturday's attack.
"The use of barrel bombs must stop," Mistura continued, calling the air force attacks "totally unacceptable."
On May 30th, the Syrian regime dropped barrel bombs from helicopters over a public marketplace in the northern province of Aleppo, Syrian Civil Defense sources said Saturday. The attack killed over 70 people and injured 170 others.
The death toll is likely to continue to rise as rescue operations search for bodies under the rubble of fallen buildings.
