President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, called Saturday for international involvement alongside the United States in the Middle East peace process.

"It is inconceivable that one single state can take on the role or arbiter and decide by itself the outcome of the Palestinian cause," Sheikh Zayed said, during a meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, according to the WAM news agency.

He called for "effective international participation alongside the United States in the peace negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis."

Sheikh Zayed also called on the United States to show impartiality in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"The United States must use carry out sincere efforts to find an equitable solution to the Palestinian cause and their position must not be aligned to that of Israel. Washington must put itself on the side of right and justice," Sheikh Zayed added.

During the meeting, Arafat briefed the UAE leader on the latest developments in the Palestinian issue and congratulated his host on his return home after a successful heart operation carried out in Cleveland, Ohio on August 28.
