The U.S. is deploying several hundred troops in and around Iraq in an effort to reinforce Baghdad and repel ISIL militants, Associated Press reports.

President Obama had previously stated that the U.S. would not send troops, yet on Monday he notified Congress that up to 275 troops could be sent to war-torn Iraq.

According to AP, three U.S. officials also stated that the White House is considering sending special forces to Iraq.

The U.S. is grappling with how to deal with a rising jihadist insurgency that is slowly taking over various Iraqi cities.

Secretary of State John Kerry recently stated that the U.S. is not ruling out air strikes.
