A Palestinian was shot dead late Saturday by Israeli troops near the Erez crossing point between the Gaza Strip and Israel, a Palestinian hospital source told AFP.

Shadi Abu Harbid, 21, from the village of Beit Hanun, was shot in the chest, the source added.

According to testimony of witnesses at the hospital, Israeli troops stationed at the cross point fired towards a group of residents of Beit Hanun without apparent provocation .

Officials said the victim, 27-year-old Shidah el Musa al-Jafari, was an electrician who was wearing a uniform when he was shot in the neck in El-Bireh, near Ramallah.

Witnesses told AFP that the electrician was working in a building with an electric drill, which a nearby soldier mistakenly took for a gun.
