Two Moroccan newspapers will confront the government in a Rabat administrative court on Wednesday for banning them, a legal source said on Saturday.

A lawyer for the weeklies Le Journal and As-Sahifa said the ban was an "attack against fundamental freedom" and that he hoped the court would annul the measure.

The Moroccan government banned three weeklies -- Le Journal, As-Sahifa, and Demain -- last weekend following a story implicating the political left in a bid to kill the late King Hassan II.

Rabat's decision was prompted by the appearance in Le Journal of November 25 of a letter attributed to former opposition leader Mohamed Basri, implicating socialist politicians in a foiled 1972 coup attempt -- RABAT (AFP)
