The European Union (EU) and Syria signed a two million Euro finance deal to support Syrian cultural heritage, a statement from the EU delegation in Damascus said Saturday.

Funded by the EU's MEDA program to support Mediterranean countries, the agreement includes a three-year on-site training scheme for experts in the fields of archeological restoration and preservation.

Between 1995 and 1999, Syria received 35 million Euros (31 million dollars) in aid from the EU, to modernize its administration, facilitate trade flows with European companies and train archeologists -- DAMASCUS (AFP)
