Egyptian military spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said in a statement on Sunday that the military had pursued and killed two militants and injured a third in northern Sinai, the Associated Press reports. Egyptian forces are battling a Daesh-affiliated insurgency in Sinai for several months.
According to the statement on Samir's Facebook page, the one militant and another was injured as they fled on a motorcycle in al-Arish. In a separate incident, another person was killed during a shootout near Mount Halal.
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has been a hotspot of violence in recent months, with attacks frequently targeting tourists and civilians. A Russian airliner crashed in Sinai on Oct. 31, killing all 224 people on board the flight. The local Daesh affiliate in Sinai claimed responsibility for the crash, saying it planted a bomb on the plane.
