Two men were killed and three others seriously hurt in the explosion of a plant that produces gases for medical purposes southeast of the Sudanese capital, a newspaper reported Monday.

Local officials and villagers rushed to the scene after hearing the "tremendous" explosion Saturday night and the two bodies and the injured were taken to Khartoum hospital, the independent Akhbar al-Youm daily said.

Only the five men were in the Bagair industrial area factory, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Khartoum, when it exploded, the paper said.

It added that a team of experts immediately began an investigation into the explosion which was initially attributed to a technical problem.

The explosion destroyed the section which produces oxygen, but it was not clear what gas or combination of gases caused the blast -- KHARTOUM (AFP)
