Two Iranians were killed in a head-on collision between a Daewoo car and a Volvo truck on a road linking Shahroud and Sabzevar (both in Khorasan province), reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA), citing a local press report.
The Persian daily, Aftab, quoted police as blaming the driver of the Daewoo for the accident, saying he was trying to overtake the other vehicle at the wrong time.
Sabzevar is located some 35 kilometers south of Mashhad (capital
of Khorasan).
Iranian roads are some of the most hazardous in the world. Traffic experts blame the high rate of accidents on dilapidated vehicles and driver carelessness.
On the average, some 15,000 people are killed and 87,000 injured in traffic-related accidents in the country annually. In statistical terms, on the average one person is killed every 40 minutes and one injured every seven minutes – Albawaba.com
