AFP reports that local militias freed two kidnapped Italians from Daesh on Friday.

"Two Italian hostages were released... in Sabratha after an operation targeting several houses after information reached security forces that Daesh elements were there," the city's mayor Hussein al-Dawadi said regarding the situation.

"They are now at a police station in Sabratha," he continued, naming a city to the east of Tripoli.

Gino Pollicardo and Filippo Calcagno were two of four employees of Bonatti, working on a construction project, who were kidnapped in July 2015. Italian officials speculated that the other two kidnapped employees were killed in the ongoing clashes between Daesh and local militas in Sabratha.

Sabratha has been the site of intense fighting between local groups and Daesh, according to AFP. The US led an airstrike on the area last month to attempt to eliminate Daesh leaders in Libya.

The freed men released the following statement: "We are free and are relatively well physically but are psychologically exhausted. We urgently need to return to Italy."
