Five people, including two opposition members of parliament, have been killed in a weekend road accident in central Gambia, the state media reported.

Twelve others were injured in Saturday's tragedy.

All were believed to have been aboard a minibus which rolled over several times after a tyre burst on a road inland from Banjul.

The two MPs, Bouba Samoura and Abou Gassama, had been on their back to the capital after accompanying the leader of their United Democratic Party (UDP), Usaina Darbo, to the inauguration of a mosque.

A former UDP MP, Kounda Camara, was also among those killed.

Seven of the 12 opposition seats in Gambia's 49-member parliament are UDP seats -- BANJUL (AFP)
