Two Fishermen Killed in Boat Blast off UAE

Two fishermen were killed and two seriously wounded in an explosion on a boat in southern Gulf waters off the United Arab Emirates, a newspaper said Wednesday. 

A fishing department official told Al-Ittihad newspaper it was an accident caused by an explosion in the boat's fuel tank. Three of the casualties were Indians and the other nationality was unknown. 

Al-Ittihad said Tuesday's blast occurred more than 200 kilometers (120 miles) off the coast of Ras al-Khaimah emirate "near the shores of the neighboring countries," Iran and Oman. 

Oman's news agency ONA, meanwhile, reported that an explosion aboard a Maltese freighter also on Tuesday but outside the Gulf killed three crewmen and wounded four more. 

It did not give the cause of the blast in the Gulf of Oman or the nationalities of the casualties -- DUBAI (AFP)
