The Turkish army seized a large amount of chemicals from a convoy attempting to illegally enter the country from Syria, according to Agence France-Press. The chemicals allegedly "could be transformed into weapons" according to the Turkish authorities.
The convoy was comprised of three vehicles that refused to stop at the Turkish-Syria border near the Turkish town of Reyhanli.
Para-military police shot the tires of the vehicles to stop the convoy. All three drivers abandoned their cars and fled in the direction of Syria. Only one of the three was arrested, according to the authorities.
The police recovered a haul of sulphur and another unidentified chemical substance from the vehicles. The substances are scheduled to be examined by a team of army specialists.
Late last week, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) reported that all of Syria's chemical production facilities had been destroyed or placed under seal. This includes 1,000 tonnes of chemical agents that can potentially be used to make 290 tonnes of chemical weapons, according to the report.
