Reuters reported Sunday that a Tunisian military court has ordered the release of the country's former leadership who were jailed after the country's 2011 revolution.
Former security chief Ali Seriati and former interior minister Rafik Bel Haj Kalem are set to be released under the ruling.
The two former leaders had previously been jailed under charges of repressing protestors during the 2011 Tunisian revolution that led to the overthrow of former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
"They should be freed in the next few days. This is a blow to the transition after the revolution," said Laila Haddad, a lawyer for families of victims who were killed in clashes during the 2011 revolution.
Tunisia's Islamist leadership resigned late last year as part of the country's democratic transition and fresh elections are set to be held by the end of this year. However, the ruling may spark sensitive tensions between the country's various political factions.
Over 300 people were killed in clashes during the country's 2011 revolution that was considered the spark for further revolutions throughout the region.
