ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order today to reimplement "maximum pressure" on Iran, aiming to deny Tehran any path to obtaining a nuclear weapon and counter its regional influence, according to an American official cited by Reuters.

The order will direct the U.S. Treasury Department to impose strict economic sanctions and enforcement mechanisms on those violating existing sanctions against Iran.

Trump, who previously withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal during his first presidency, has repeatedly vowed to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power by any means necessary.

This decision comes amid escalating hostilities between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

In 2024, Israel assassinated Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and struck Iran’s diplomatic mission in Damascus, triggering Iranian missile and drone retaliation against Tel Aviv.

These developments have heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, given the U.S.'s unwavering support for Israel.

The renewed sanctions also follow the January 2025 Iran-Russia strategic partnership pact, a 20-year agreement signed in Moscow, deepening Iran’s alliance with Russia.

Additionally, Trump's move coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington, where he is set to meet Trump today.

Discussions will reportedly focus on Iran, a potential Gaza ceasefire deal, and Trump’s backing of Israeli plans to annex the West Bank and forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza—a move widely condemned as ethnic cleansing.

Trump’s return to the White House signals a dramatic shift in U.S. Middle East policy, reigniting tensions with Iran and reinforcing U.S.-Israel alignment at a time of mounting regional instability.
