ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump has ignited controversy by declaring that the only solution to the ongoing crisis with Canada is for it to become the 51st U.S. state.

His remarks came as he announced a sharp increase in tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports, doubling them from 25% to 50%.

Trump justified the tariff hike as a response to Ontario’s decision to impose taxes on electricity exports to the U.S.

“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA,” he posted on Truth Social, calling Canada "one of the highest tariffing nations anywhere in the world."

The new tariffs are set to take effect Wednesday, escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The U.S. stock market reacted negatively to Trump’s announcement, experiencing a sharp selloff amid fears that his aggressive trade policies could push the economy into a recession.

As pressure mounts on Trump to present a viable economic strategy, his tariff threats and controversial remarks about Canada’s statehood have only fueled uncertainty in the markets and international relations.
