Three Yemenis Shot in Mosque Attack Die of Injuries, Gunman Arrested

Three Yemenis wounded in a deadly hail of machine-gun fire as they knelt in prayer at a mosque have died of their injuries, while the gunman has been arrested, police and tribal sources said Friday. 

The three men were among seven seriously wounded in an attack on a mosque on Wednesday night at Dhibin, in Omran province, 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of the capital that killed six immediately, tribal sources said. 

A police official said they had arrested a gunman, identified as Jibran al-Shami, in Arhab region, 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Sanaa. 

According to police but contrary to witness statements, two men carried out the attack, Shami acted alone. 

The attack came after a stormy debate about forthcoming elections, witnesses said. 

It was the first bloody incident linked to the February 20 municipal elections, the first since the north and south re-united in 1990. Official campaigning for the elctions are not due to start until early February – SANAA (AFP)
