Three American civilians were shot dead and two wounded in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Mosul, the U.S. military said Monday. They worked for a non-governmental organization. The Americans were traveling in one car on the eastern side of the city when they were attacked, The AP reported.

Meanwhile, one US soldier killed and about 20 others wounded in less than 48 hours during operations west of Baghdad, it was reported Monday.

The two day sweep in Ramadi on Saturday and Sunday led to the discovery of a few bombs and the detention of some Iraqi resistance fighters. It also resulted in a large number of injuries, Al Jazeera reported.

A US military statement confirmed the casualties were from Task Force All American and the US Marines during an operation some 100 kilometers west of Baghdad.

"Soldiers discovered and disarmed five improvised explosive devices before they could be detonated and captured seven enemy personnel," the statement said.

Elsewhere, an Arab member of Kirkuk's city council and his bodyguard were shot dead in a drive-by shooting on Monday, Reuters reported.

Witnesses said a red car pulled up alongside a vehicle carrying Agar al-Tawil, a Shi'ite Arab council member, and his bodyguard and opened fire.

Major General Hazim al-Obeidi of the Kirkuk police confirmed the assassination and conveyed an investigation was launched. (Albawaba.com)
