More than 7,000 Cairo university students protested Tuesday against the Egyptian-hosted Sharm el-Sheikh summit of Arab and Israeli leaders, and demanded the withdrawal of Egypt's ambassador from Israel.
The students denounced the "shameful" summit at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where the Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed Tuesday to urge their peoples to end 20 days of spiraling violence and keep the peace process alive.
The demonstrators remained inside the campus of Ain Shams University in northeastern Cairo and did not try to move onto the streets where hundreds of security forces had been deployed to stop the protest spreading.
During the demonstration the students also demanded economic ties with Israel be severed and a boycott of US products and called for the withdrawal of Egypt's ambassador to Israel.
The Sharm el-Sheikh summit, which also grouped US President Bill Clinton and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, has been perceived in Egypt as an attempt to upstage a summit of Arab leaders set for Saturday and Sunday.
Demonstrations have broken out repeatedly in Egypt since the eruption of violence in the Palestinian territories on 28 September during which over 100 people have died, the vast majority of them Palestinians – CAIRO (AFP)
