A group of "terrorists" belonging to Iran's armed opposition group, the People's Mujahedeen, were arrested after they crossed into Iran with the aim of carrying out attacks, the official IRNA news agency reported late Saturday.

The "terrorists...had entered Iranian territory in order to carry out terrorist acts including mortar attacks," the agency said citing the intelligence ministry.

It said that the group's equipment for carrying out terrorist actions had also been confiscated. It did not specify how many people were involved.

Clashes between the Mujahedeen and the Iranian armed forces have been on the increase for a year.

Iran says the end of Mujahedeen operations from Iraqi territory is one of the conditions for the normalization of relations between Iran and Iraq, who fought a war from 1980 to 1988.

The Mujahedeen fired five mortar bombs August 28 on a military barracks that the Iranian authorities said had been abandoned, east of Tehran.

On July 15, the intelligence ministry itself was the target of a mortar attack by the Mujahedeen – TEHRAN (AFP)
