The Tehran metro has decided to maintain separate cars for men and women to provide "better calm" for its passengers, transport officials said Monday.

"The decision to have a car for women only was taken after complaints from commuters," metro chief Mohammad-Reza Barari said, cited by state television.

He said the move had taken effect in recent days on the line running from Tehran to the nearby city of Karaj in order to provide "better calm for passengers."

But the television reported that the decision had elicited some protests from commuters.
