A small Luxembourg-registered tanker was stranded in stormy waters off the northern French coast Sunday but there was no risk of an oil slick, local maritime police said.

The vessel left the port of Boulogne-sur-mer with its tanks empty late Saturday, but was soon stranded, only two kilometers (1.2 miles) off the French coast, in rough seas and winds over 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour.

Two rescue boats reached the tanker soon after and were working to prevent the vessel from running aground.

They were waiting for weather conditions to improve before towing the tanker back into port -- BOULOGNE-SUR-MER (AFP)
