Syrian President Bashar Assad telephoned Jordan's King Abdullah II late Wednesday to review the latest developments facing the Middle East peace process, the official Petra news agency reported.
The conversation focused on the efforts being made to push forward Arab-Israeli negotiations as well as other regional issues and bilateral cooperation, Petra said. It did not give further details.
The two leaders spoke as Palestinian and Israeli peace negotiators are to resume talks to reach a settlement between them and amid calls from Syria for an urgent Arab summit to support the Palestinian position.
It also follows expectations by the head of Syria's state-run broadcasting service, Fayez Sayegh, who said Wednesday that peace with Israel could be possible within a few months.
Abdullah, who maintains close ties with Assad, has helped in the past to bring Syrians and Israelis to the negotiating table – AMMAN (AFP)
