Syrian army troops have reclaimed the Aleppo-Damascus highway from Daesh militants on Wednesday, Reuters reports.
The road, which had previously been cut off by Daesh, is the only point of access to the government controlled side of Aleppo.
The news was announced on Syrian state television and was confirmed by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"Our army units have gained full control of the Aleppo-Khanasser-Ithriya-Al-Salmiyeh road after eliminating a number of ISIS [Daesh] terrorists and it will be open for citizens from tomorrow morning," state television said.
The road had been closed since the conflict first started in 2012 when Syrian rebels cut off the major highway. The closure has left residents of western Aleppo besieged, causing basic living costs to sky rocket.
