A majority of the American people and the US Congress are opposed to a military strike in Syria. In a bid to sway support among the lawmakers, the White House aired several graphic videos that allegedly prove the use of chemical weapons in Damascus on August 21.
Congress returned from their summer break on Monday in time to discuss and vote on the US launching a military strike on Syria on Tuesday.
US President Barack Obama has faced an uphill struggle trying to rally support from both top US lawmakers and the general public, who are wary of the US getting involved in another Middle Eastern conflict after the failure and bloodshed of Iraq and Afghanistan.
US Secretary of State John Kerry, who travelled to Europe this weekend in an attempt to rally international support for the strikes, said that any US-led attack would be limited, seeking only to take out the Syrian government's chemical weapons stockpiles and not initiate a regime change. He has stated several times that there will be "no US boots on the ground" in Syria.
