Syria’s Foreign Ministry has studied the bill approved by the U.S. Congress and signed by President George W. Bush, considering Jerusalem as the capital of Israel with some preservations, indicating that the U.S. policy regarding Jerusalem has not changed.

According to the official Syrian Arab News Agency on Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement that such a decision represented a break away from international law and international legitimacy, especially the U.N. Security Council resolutions in favor of which the United States voted, considering the city of Jerusalem a part of Arab territories occupied by Israel in 1967.

The ministry stressed that such a dangerous decision once again serves as evidence of the blatant U.S. bias to the continuation of the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem and the Arab territories and unlimited support to Israel, which has rejected the implementation of 28 U.N. Security Council resolutions thus far.

Moreover, according to SANA, the statement highlighted Syria’s rejection of the decision and warned against the dangers of its implementation on security and peace in the region and in the world.

The foreign ministry called upon the U.S. administration not to implement the decision, and called on Arabs and Muslims to activate the decisions of the Arab and Islamic summits regarding Jerusalem.

Additionally, the statement urged the United Nations to shoulder responsibility and to defend its credibility. The foreign ministry also expressed support to the call of holding an emergency meeting by the Jerusalem Committee to take the necessary steps whereby the Arab and Muslims rights in Jerusalem would be ensured.
