A Palestinian official has confirmed that the Syrian and Palestinian delegations to the Arab summit being held in Amman disagreed ahead of a scheduled meeting between Syrian President Bashar Assad and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Head of Arafat’s press office Mohammad Odwan said that chances of holding a meeting are 50-50 after the Syrians insisted that the final communiqué of the summit include a decision that the Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian tracks of the peace process be organically associated.
Sources said that the Palestinians rejected the offer, which necessitated Egyptian foreign minister Amr Moussa’s intervention to draft a reconciliatory provision.
Odwan charged that the Syrians are “creating difficulties so that the meeting [between the two leaders] does not take place.
He expected that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will mediate between the two parties to settle their differences – Albawaba.com
