The Jordanian ambassador to Damascus Omar Al Amad said in a press statement published Tuesday that two of about 120 protesters in Syria, were able to break into the building of the Jordanian embassy in Damascus late Monday. They brought down the Jordanian flag.
He added that "the Syrian security forces did not take any action to prevent these individuals from entering the the embassy." He denied reports that the protesters hoisted flag of Hizbullah. He said that "according to international agreements, the responsibility to protect embassies and diplomatic missions is the responsibility of the hosting country."
This development came hours after the Jordanian king hinted in an interview to the BBC that Syrian president should step down.
Meanwhile, At least 70 people were killed in southern Syria on Monday, most of them in clashes between army deserters and army troops, activists said on Tuesday. According to Reuters, the Syrian Organization for Human Rights said 34 soldiers and members of Syrian security forces were killed in clashes with suspected army deserters who attacked military vehicles in the southern province on Monday.
Video footage aired by Qatar-based Al Jazeera television showed a tank engulfed in flames, alongside other burning vehicles.
At least 12 of the gunmen were also killed, the British-based organization said, while another 23 people were killed in "gunfire from security and military checkpoints" in villages located in the southern Dara'a region.
