The Syrian government said it is ready to cooperate with international and regional efforts to fight terrorists in the region, Reuters reports. Syrian officials said they would even cooperate with Britain and the U.S.

According to Reuters, a news conference on Syrian state TV also condemned the killing of American journalist James Foley.

Syrian officials said that neighboring states should exchange intelligence with Syria to better combat Islamic militants.

Fighters from the extremist group the Islamic State have taken over large swathes of Iraq and also have a heavy presence in Syria. ISIS militants in Syria seek to overthrow the Assad regime and expand their territory.
