Symantec releases public betas of Norton internet security 2009, Norton antivirus 2009

Norton 2009 is Fast and Light on System Resources, Strong on Protection

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), makers of Norton security software, today announced the availability of the public betas of Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton AntiVirus 2009, designed to set a new industry standard for speed and performance.  The beta of the award-winning product line is available for download from http://www.symantec.com/norton-beta/.

The new products have more than 300 new performance-related improvements, combined with industry-leading security features.  Norton 2009 has reduced the use of disk space and memory, and has new technology that streamlines scans.  In addition, Norton 2009 will be delivering the industry’s fastest protection updates, streamed in near real time.

“Based on customer feedback, we viewed performance as a key feature for this release.  Norton 2009 will give users award-winning security technology while ensuring optimal PC performance,” said Rowan Trollope, Senior Vice President of Consumer Products.  “Our goal is to create the fastest security product in the world, hands down.”

Norton Internet Security 2009 and Norton AntiVirus 2009 include an innovative new technology called Norton Insight that reduces the need to scan files in the first place.  Leveraging data from millions of Norton Community members, Norton Insight allows the Norton security product to avoid scanning any files which are commonly found on most computers and statistically determined to be trusted.

The new releases are designed with unique features to deliver an optimal customer experience. Gamers and professional computer users will enjoy the new silent mode which automatically suspends alerts and updates to avoid interrupting or slowing games and movies.  Additionally, the new user interface (UI), which is streamlined for all users, gives advanced users the ability to see “under the hood” to track detection and performance status, as well as easier access to detailed configuration settings.

Key Norton 2009 performance improvements include:
• Norton™ Insight architecture drives faster, fewer, shorter scans through intelligence-driven technology that targets only those files at risk.
• New installer enables one-click and one-minute complete product installation.
• Pulse Updates deliver up-to-the-minute response time against new threats with pulse signature updates streaming in near real time.  By downloading smaller and more frequent updates, users are better protected and performance is also improved.
Additional performance enhancements will continue to be fine-tuned during the beta cycle.

Key Norton 2009 security functionality includes:
• Protects with industry-leading security through the Norton™ Protection System, a multilayered protection system that works in concert to stop threats before they impact you. Includes Browser Protection against increasing Web-based attacks, real-time SONAR protection, Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), antirootkit, antivirus and antispyware technologies.
