ALBAWABA- The South African delegation at the International Court of Justice has made a bold statement, accusing Israel of being an apartheid regime committing genocide in Gaza. They assert that the Court entertains the authority to intervene and halt the ongoing conflict under the Law on the Prevention of Genocide.
According to the delegation, Israel's actions, enabled by decades of impunity, have led to the current dire situation in Gaza. They argue that legal circumstances justify their demand for new temporary measures to address the deteriorating situation.
Highlighting the importance of Egypt's participation in the lawsuit, the delegation emphasizes the regional significance of their case. They call on countries supporting Israel to pressure their ally to end the genocide in Gaza.
The South African delegation expresses hope that the Court will swiftly issue orders in response to their demands. They stress the urgency of the situation and urge the Court to use its powers to intervene and stop the violence in Gaza.
Additionally, the representative of South Africa at the ICJ refutes Israel's argument of acting in self-defense in Gaza.
He points out three main flaws in this argument: a state's right to self-defense does not justify "unlimited violence," self-defense cannot justify genocide as the prohibition on genocide is absolute, and a state's right to self-defense does not extend to territories it occupies.
