The son of detained Egyptian activist Saadeddin Ibrahim appealed to President Hosni Mubarak Saturday to intervene for the release of his father, a month after he was arrested.
Amir Ibrahim made the plea at a press conference at the family's home in southeastern Cairo two days after prosecutors renewed the detention of his US national father for a third consecutive 15-day period.
"We're planning on sending (the president) a letter. We're requesting for him to intervene," Amir said.
Ibrahim's wife Barbara told the press conference that the authorities should at the very least give her husband a fair and speedy trial.
"What we're asking for is justice and due process," she said.
US State department spokesman Philip Reeker said Thursday the United States is "deeply disappointed" at Ibrahim's continued detention without formal charges.
Ibrahim, director of the Cairo's Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies and a professor at the American University in Cairo, was arrested June 30 accused of forgery, fraud, taking bribes from abroad and harming the interests of the country.
International human rights groups such as Amnesty International have accused Cairo of violating international treaties it has signed by detaining Ibrahim without filing formal and detailed charges against him.
Ten other people from Ibn Khaldun Center and Women Voters' Support Center have been detained in connection with the investigation - CAIRO (AFP)
