A heavily armed Muslim militant launched a solo attack on the camp of a specialist police counter-insurgency group in Indian Kashmir on Monday, killing three police officers before he was shot dead.
The attack on the camp belonging to the police Special Operations Group occurred in Babatang, around 27 kilometers (17 miles) north of the Kashmiri summer capital, Srinagar.
The casualties included an SOG inspector, sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspector, a police spokesman said.
It was the latest in a series of militant operations against the security forces in the wake of India's decision last month to extend the suspension of counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir.
The ceasefire has been rejected by most militant groups as a propaganda ploy aimed at finding favour with the international community.
Some senior police officials in Kashmir have also complained that the ceasefire has put their men in the front of the militant firing line.
On March 2, four pan-Islamic guerrilla groups jointly ambushed a police patrol and killed 17 policemen in Kashmir's southern Jammu region.
