Twenty militants were killed Wednesday in an attack by Egyptian helicopters in Sinai, said the Egyptian state television. It came three days after 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed in an attack blamed on Islamist extremists. According to Nile News, an Apache fired on vehicles of militants in the northern peninsula.

A military official of Sinai told the press on condition of anonymity that "20 terrorists were killed" in an operation launched in the village of Tumah. "The operation is continuing," he added.

Other security officials have reported the strike took place near the Sinai town of Sheikh Zuwayidm , which is located ten kilometers from the Gaza Strip.

Last night, unidentified assailants attacked security checkpoints near the town of El-Arish, officials stated, but no one was killed in the shootout.
