Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Torch Relay Committee today announced the route for the much anticipated Asian Games Torch Relay during a press briefing at Qanat Al Qasba’s Development Authority offices.
Mr. Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, Head of the Torch Relay Committee for the Emirate of Sharjah expressed his excitement regarding this historical event “The arrival of the 15th Asian Games relay torch will surely re-emphasize Sharjah as the cultural capital of the UAE. We are proud to be associated with this event. We have planned a series of cultural and entertainment activities that will entertain and enthrall the people of Sharjah.”
With an estimated large number of participants expected, Captain Ibrahim Mir Abdul Rahaman– Member of the Safety and Security Committee announced several safety measures undertaken by the Sharjah Police to avoid traffic congestions and ensure the well being of the general population during the torch relay.
For his part, Mr. Saeed Najjar - Member of the Marketing Committee discussed some of the initiatives his team has taken to make this event a memorable experience for all.
Some of the activities that visitors can look forward to include breathtaking hot air balloons displays, vintage cars that will carry the torch bearers, a spectacular display of fireworks and a plethora of other events.
Other speakers included Ms. Nada Askar– Head of the Public Relations Committee and Ms. Maysoon Alhosany- member of the Public Relations Committee discussed the various points and details surrounding the route of the Torch Relay undertaken in coordination with the Qatari Asian Games organizing committee.
The relay is expected to commence its tour starting at Sharjah’s Academic City and make its round through some of Sharjah’s famous landmarks which include the Book Roundabout, Sharjah’s Women’s Club, the Corniche, the “Hosn” roundabout, the Sharjah Bridge, Khalid’s lagoon and finally Qanat Al Qasba.
The torch relay for the 2006 Doha Asian Games will travel a record breaking 55 thousand kilometers in a span of 55 days and will pass through 15 countries of which some include India, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Iran, Oman, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain before returning to Qatar on the 25th of November.
