Dr. Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Sharjah Ruler and Supreme Council member, was honored at Cairo University on Tuesday. Shaikh Sultan, a Cairo University graduate, was honored in recognition of his receiving the King Faisal International Award for Service to Islam , and for his contribution to the Arab and Islamic culture. During the impressive ceremony, he was also presented with a commemorative award. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Atef Obeid, Egyptian Prime Minister, and marked the second anniversary of Cairo University’s “Scientific Day”, according to the Khaleej Times
The King Faisal International Prize ranks among the most prestigious international awards. The prize for Service to Islam was established in 1977 and first awarded in 1979. This year’s prize for Service to Islam has been awarded to Shaikh Sultan. The citation to the award read: “As a devoted Muslim leader and philanthropist, Shaikh Sultan has fostered numerous educational, social, health care, and housing projects that have benefited Muslim communities throughout the world. In his capacity as Ruler of Sharja and member of the United Arab Emirates Supreme Council, His Highness has relentlessly emphasized the values of Islam and spared no effort in implementing its teachings.”
University Chancellor Najeeb Al Hilali and Egypt’s Higher Education Minister, Dr. Mufid Shihab declared that Shaikh Sultan, who graduated from Cairo University in 1971, was one of the most distinguished graduates of the University. The Sharjah Executive Council sent Dr. Al Qasimi a cable of congratulations on his being honored.
Dr. Mohammed Abdul Fatah Al Qasas was honored as well with the Shaikh Zayed International Award for Environment.
