Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi was killed on Sunday in the city of Samarra, located 110 km (70 miles) north of Baghdad, reports the AFP.

The dominantly Sunni city of Samarra is also home to the Askari shrine, one of the most holy of Shia sites.

The military officer was part of Iran's mission to provide military advice to Iraq to better prepare army troops and allied militia in their fight against Daesh, including providing arms to Kurdish forces in the country's northern region.

His funeral will be held on Monday in Tehran.

Iran is not participating in a US-led coalition conducting air strikes against Daesh positions in Iraq and neighbouring Syria.
