Police tightened security at embassies, mosques, synagogues and the airport in Rome Friday to ensure that Jews and Muslims in the Italian capital feel safe despite the raging violence in the Middle East, a statement said.
"Security has been increased at buildings representing Israeli, Palestinian and American interests and also at those from satellite countries that could be concerned by the crisis in the Middle East," said a police statement.
Additional measures were taken at the Rome-Fiumicino airport, in particular for flights to Israel and Egypt.
Police were sent in to guard the Rome mosque and the main synagogue, the statement said, adding that these measures were aimed "at reassuring the communities affected by the conflict."
