A young Indian man stabbed to death a 16-year-old schoolgirl in a town near Bombay after she spurned his marriage proposal, reports said Tuesday.

Rajesh Laxman Date, 21, had proposed marriage to Aarti Raut a few days before, but was turned down.

The Indian Express said Rajesh attacked her on a busy street on Saturday as she left home for school.

Aarti cried out for help, but none among a crowd of onlookers came to her rescue.
