Two women were detained by police in Riyadh Wednesday for breaking the official ban on female driving, according to the Associated Press.

Saudi activists told AP that police stopped the women and took them to the local police station.

In recent times, women have not been detained if they have been caught driving. Rather, their male relatives have been asked to "sign statements saying they would now allow the women to drive again."

In late September, KSA activists renewed efforts to allow women the right to drive. The campaign garnered attention both nationally and globally.

In recent weeks, KSA leadership has called upon its Human Rights Council to review recommendations from international bodies regarding giving the women the right to drive.
